(COLUMBUS, Ohio) September 2014 – With a unique focus on cancer patients, the first emergency department of its kind in the U.S. has opened its doors at The Ohio State University and is ushering in a new trend in personalized health care.  The new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is the first to have a cancer-specific emergency department integrated with a regular E.D.

“In emergency situations, cancer patients can have very specific needs,” said Dr. Tom Terndrup, chair of emergency medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.  “We not only have to understand their condition, but we have to be able to quickly make treatment decisions based on what kind of therapies or medications they might be taking,” he said.

For example, because cancer patients’ immune systems are often compromised, they are especially vulnerable to infection.  To lower their risks, cancer patients at Ohio State don’t share a waiting room with other emergency patients, instead they are taken to a special unit designed just for their needs.  “There they are treated by a specially-trained staff with specific guidelines in place,” Terndrup said.  “That attention to detail is critical for these patients.”
